Let’s pray in a fresh way and connect with God in ASL!

ASL Signs for Praying Scripture

Devotional and prayer

Do you ever feel like your prayers are saying the same thing? And you want a fresh way to connect with God?

This month, we are exploring how to have a fresh connection in our relationship with God by praying Scripture! One of the best places to pray Scripture is through the book of Psalms. Donald S. Whitney says when you are praying Scripture, “…basically what you are doing is taking words that originated in the heart and mind of God and circulating them through your heart and mind back to God. By this means his words become the wings of your prayers.”

When you pray Scripture, follow three simple steps:

  1. Read or watch a verse.
  2. Pause to consider the verse.
  3. Pray what that verse brings to your heart.

For example, let’s take a look at Psalm 23 as an example of how to do this. Psalm 23:1 says,

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”

ANow pause to reflect on this verse. What is it saying to you?

Based on this verse, your prayer might be something like this, “Lord, thank you for being my shepherd. Thank you for ensuring that I have everything that I need. When I worry about my needs, help me to remember that you are providing for me.” You can also pray for whatever else comes to mind with this Scripture.

Once you feel like you have completed this verse, move on to Psalm 23:2. It says,

“He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside still waters,”

Your prayer may be something like this: “Lord, thank you for helping me rest in you. You know I am terrible at taking time to rest, but you continue to show me where and how to rest. Help me remember to keep the Sabbath for your glory.”

You can keep praying this way until you either run out of time or finish the Psalm. Praying using this method helps us to pray with fresh awareness of God’s presence in our daily life. We hope that you enjoy praying using this method!

Go ahead and try praying Scripture today. Pick one of your favorite Psalms to get started.
